CHW Program Learning Series1

What is this series?

This digital learning series is designed to equip public health departments and CHW-supporting organizations with strategies for CHW integration and sustainability. Developed by CHW and ally experts, the series consists of four modules, each with four lessons that run approximately 30 minutes for a total viewing time of approximately 3 hours.

These were created in collaboration with the Center for Community Health Alignment (CCHA), the National Council on CHW Core Consensus Standards (C3 Council), and the Community Health Worker Center for Research and Evaluation (CHW-CRE).

The modules feature short videos, key resources, and practical guidance. Content was reviewed by envision staff and the envision CHW Council to ensure alignment with CHW priorities.

Learning Series FAQS

The CHW Program Learning Series was supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $415,000 with 100 percent funded by CDC/HHS. The contents are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor an endorsement, by CDC/HHS, or the U.S. Government

Organizational Readiness

Sustainability starts from the inside. Many programs begin without a solid foundation — and struggle later with burnout, unclear expectations, or lack of leadership buy-in. This module helps you assess your organization’s readiness to support CHWs by exploring best practices in infrastructure, culture, and planning. It ensures you’re not just hiring CHWs — you’re setting them up for success.

CHW
Standards

Clarity is power. Without shared understanding of CHWs’ roles, programs risk under-utilizing, misclassifying, or misrepresenting this workforce. This module introduces the National C3 Council’s core roles and competencies  — to strengthen consistency, advocate for appropriate funding and training, and protect the integrity of CHW practice.

Lesson Modules

CHW Financial Sustainability

This module introduces envision’s invaluable Financial Sustainability Toolkit, an effective resource created & developed with and for CHWs in collaboration with subject matter experts. This toolkit offers practical tools for partnership and power building, shifting narratives, and planning for a future where CHWs and their work are both valued and sustained.

CHW Research
& Evaluation

Evaluation often happens to CHWs — not with them. But when CHWs shape and lead evaluation and research, the results are more valid, equitable, and useful. This module promotes participatory, CHW-led approaches — helping you and your team co-create metrics, tell meaningful stories, and measure what truly matters for CHW impact and sustainability.
